Many people out there think Tech is a get-rich-quick scheme. They assume you simply grab a skill and earn millions starting from your next breath. And this is often what motivates them to pursue a career in technology; they choose the one that they hear is the highest paying.

Tech is broad. There are many tech skills out there, each one with its glories and perks. It’s up to you to properly look at each of these skills side by side with what you consider your strengths and weaknesses, before making a decision. The tech world is a highly competitive one. If you make the mistake of choosing a career you don’t love because of money, peer pressure, or greed, you just might regret it sooner or later. Passion is necessary to make anything work.

Ladies, having stressed that you shouldn’t pursue a career just because it’s high paying or your loved ones are putting a lot of pressure on you, let’s continue to the next thing on the list.

Know yourself: your talents, strengths, and weaknesses…

It is important to match your strength to your career. 

Who you are is important, especially when it comes to your profession. In truth, what you’ve done, where you’ve been, your relatives, pals, and locality are important.

Knowing what is meaningful to you is vital to your professional development. To build career ideas and consider future steps, you must first know your hobbies, values, strengths, and talents and how these relate to meaningful employment and the life you would like to live.

You know yourself best, but it’s a good idea to take a step back now and then to assess how you’ve evolved, grown, or remained the course. 

New information and a greater sense of self-awareness might help you define your goals and discover your career more effectively. The lessons you took, extracurricular activities you participated in, and people you encountered throughout the past term introduced you to new ideas that may have nurtured or modified your values and curiosities.

Self-awareness is a crucial aspect of professional growth since it forces you to examine yourself critically and make changes. Studying your strengths, shortcomings, achievements, and mistakes, in the past, can allow you to move forward with reenergized goals, new career ambitions, and new perspectives.

Before choosing a career in tech, you ask yourself:

• How good are your negotiation, conflict resolution, and communication skills?
• Do you like to be hands-on, conducting meetings, planning, and fixing things daily?
• Do you like visualization, crunching numbers, and making meaningful information with data?
• Are you versatile with Microsoft excel? If not, would you like to learn it?
• How good are you with public speaking and presentations?
• Can you easily explain complex ideas in simple terms? 
• Do you like creating content and following trends?
• Are you good at communicating, storytelling, and messaging?
• Are you able to creatively interpret the ideas of others?
• Do you like visualization, crunching numbers, and making meaningful information with data?
• Have you played around with Coreldraw, Canva, Photoshop, or any design tool?

Know Which Area to Specialize In

When it comes to the many specialty areas of information technology, there are some main categories that they fall under. One way to take the very first step towards picking an IT career path is to choose which major target area sounds ideal for you.

If you want to transition into tech but you are scared you have to write lines and lines of code, relax. Several tech careers do not need you to write one single line of code. Some of the tech career categories that do not require coding skills are:

• UI/UX Design
• Product Design
• Product Marketing
• Data Analytics
• Business Analysis
• Salesforce Administration

So, having found out what your strengths, talents, and skills are, you need to study each of these categories and find out which one works best for you.

If you’ve worked as a graphics designer before or you just love using Canva to create mini birthday, wedding, or anniversary posts, you might just fare well as a UI/UX designer. 

If you have great communication skills and you’re good at convincing people to buy something or do something, you might just make a great product marketer.

Data analytics might just be your thing if you love working with numbers and turning raw data into information that can be easily understood.

Transferable skills like communication, leadership, teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, time management, critical thinking, research, negotiation, conflict resolution, and project management can help you excel in your tech career. Some tech professions require certain soft skills to thrive. For instance, if you are interested in pursuing a career as a data analyst, you should have critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills among others.

Talk to Someone About Your Decision

It’s as easy as stated. There are people out there who have been where you are and have soared past. These people understand what it’s like to be at a point where you have to carefully pick a career path. Not just any career path but one you can excel at without struggle. 

You could join a tech women community, get a mentor or talk to a friend who is already in the tech industry.  Get to know what others think, especially those who are already experts in the career field you have chosen. It’d do you a lot of good!
